Authentic Outreach, an online course with George Kao: a rainbow swirl painting of a person with arms raised
Why this course

Most clients need an invitation

From personally coaching hundreds of people who are more heart-centered, I know how difficult it can be to find clients, and to deal with the idea of outreach and selling.

We naturally avoid outreach, and would rather work on creating content, or even administrative tasks.

Many solopreneurs fall into the trap of thinking that if they “build it, they will come”… assuming that enough new clients will find them if their services are good enough, or if they post enough content...

But finding clients doesn’t have to feel draining or uncomfortable. In this course, a few common sales rules don’t apply:

  • ✓You won’t get scripts to copy. You get outlines and examples, and write every message in your own words.
  • ✓No single method is a must. You choose from a menu, and practice the ones that energize you.
  • ✓You start with the people who already know and like you, even just three of them.
  • ✓Discovery calls need no persuading or convincing. You listen, and see whether you’d love to work together.
  • ✓You set process goals, like the outreach you’ll do this week, which you can control.

The way that we go about doing our sales and marketing is viewed by our audience as an expression of our values.

If we do it from a place of service, rather than “selling”, our audience can sense that kind of integrity and generosity.

When it feels great to the heart, it’s likely to resonate with our audience, and be more sustainable for you too.

What you’ll learn

What you’ll be able to do, step by step

Each module has short videos and a lesson document you can read or hand to your AI. Many lessons also include past students’ questions, with my answers.

  1. Modules 1–2 · The authentic “selling” mindset, and staying organized

Choose the kinds of outreach that feel right to you, and get organized

Look at what has already brought you clients, and at the kinds of selling that have turned you off. Then practice seeing marketing as connecting and serving, and selling as understanding and helping.

You’ll make your own copy of my outreach template, a Google Doc for your favorite methods, your message drafts and a list of people.

Module 1 is free to watch for 72 hours: start the free Module 1 replay.

  2. Module 3 · Circles of Enrollment

Invite the people closest to you first, then widen the circle

See yourself as the Director of Admissions for your business, choosing who you let in. Then plan when to invite each circle, working back from the date you’d love new clients to begin.

This approach is for work with limited room, like 1:1 clients or a small group. You don’t need an email list to start, since personal messages and small BCC emails are enough.

  3. Module 4 · Your authentic outreach message

Write one heart-to-heart message to someone who’d love to support you

Start a list of people who’d support your business if they only knew how (your Top 100, though three names are enough to begin).

Then pause on a name that opens your heart, write to that person from that feeling, and sleep on your message. You send it the next day, only if it still feels good.

  4. Modules 5–6 · Netcaring and referrals, with guest teacher Mira Rao

Keep in touch with your best people, and ask for referrals in your own words

Mira Rao, a resilience and embodiment coach, shows how she keeps her network organized, and why she keeps netcaring even when her practice is full.

Then choose your own weekly rhythm (even two or three people a week adds up) and write a referral request from my outline, in your words.

  5. Modules 7–8 · An easily referrable issue, and letting people experience your work

Give your network a clear reason to refer you, and a first step into your work

Brainstorm ten issues your work helps with, sleep on your list, narrow it to three, and let your audience vote. (We go deeper in my Authentic Market Discovery course.)

Then invite people into a Beta Group, a “Describe my work” session or a Recorded Sample, and follow up afterward.

  6. Module 9 · Gentle Launches

Share an offer with two messages and a real deadline

A gentle launch is two messages, an announcement and a reminder, posted everywhere your audience is. You’ll learn how often to launch, how much notice to give, and why a real due date builds the trust that fake urgency wears away.

Even with only one offer, you can launch regularly, from a fresh angle each time.

  7. Modules 10–12 · Collabs, testimonials and your newsletter

Let colleagues, clients and your newsletter help spread the word

Trade sessions with colleagues, include a colleague’s gift in your offer (and yours in theirs), and ask every new client where they heard of you.

Ask for testimonials with a few easy questions people can choose from. And invite your friends and colleagues to your newsletter, about once a year.

  8. Module 13 · Transforming your mindset

Reach out from a love of connection, even when fear shows up

What to do when you don’t hear back, how to start with your Top 3, and how to begin charging for work you’ve been doing for free.

  9. Module 14 · FTA (free to attend) webinars

Plan and host a free webinar

Choose a topic (you already know enough to teach one), outline your webinar, and set up sign-ups and a feedback form.

You’ll also decide what to offer at the end, and how to feel about low attendance. (Even one person is worth the experience.)

  10. Modules 15–16 · Gentle launch posts and tracking

Write launch posts in your own voice, and learn from each launch

Write origin-story, testimonial and “Aha!” moment posts.

Then keep a simple launch journal (a blank document works), which trains your sense of what your audience responds to.

  11. Module 17 · Authentic discovery calls

Hold a discovery call that listens, with no need to persuade

Prepare, set the context, and ask questions with gentle curiosity.

You’ll also answer “How much do you charge?” without making a big deal of the question, and follow up afterward.

  12. Modules 18–21 · Your plan going forward

Leave with an outreach plan you can keep, month by month

Pick your best content, polish it lightly and share it again (I call this Stage 2 Content). If you offer higher-priced work, an optional module shows how to stage your enrollment.

Then build a monthly and weekly plan from the Menu of Practice Options, with process goals you control. A final module of extra lessons covers questions like how many sessions to offer a client.

The frameworks

Two maps to come back to

Circles of Enrollment

  1. 1Inner circle: current and past clients you love, and people you know personally
  2. 2Middle circle: your newsletter, and colleagues who share with their people
  3. 3Outer circle: social media, and anywhere else you announce publicly

Each circle hears about your offer before the next one does. Your closest people get a personal invitation first, as a courtesy.

The Menu of Practice Options

  1. 1Mindset
  2. 2Maintenance
  3. 3Methods
  4. 4Messages

I set up the course like a four-course meal. Each month you pick one item from each course, and if you’re pressed for time, from just the first course or two.

From students

What students loved most

When students write about this course, these are the moments they mention most:

  • ✓Seeing selling as a way of caring, and choosing clients as the Director of Admissions for their business.
  • ✓Inviting their inner circle first, and finding that people were glad to hear from them.
  • ✓Being told not to send a message until it feels good and right.
  • ✓Realizing how many people they already know, and hearing Mira Rao describe her own netcaring in generous detail.
  • ✓Permission to keep outreach light, like batching it once a month.

These reflections come from students of earlier versions of the course.

“This course was so helpful! George makes implementation feel attainable by providing practical steps for how to carry out the strategies, and templates for how to keep track of all the information.

As a result, I feel organized, not overwhelmed.”

“I would never have thought about inviting my inner circle first, I thought they would find it offensive, or pushy. … To my surprise two of my inner circle people were really excited about it!”

KarinaStudent

“Soo much relief watching this lesson! I had been carving out an hour a week for netcaring/outreach and had been finding it overwhelming so the permission to batch it up to once a month felt so good.”

Sale or no sale

After some sales calls with so-called experts, I came away feeling uncared for, and liking humans less. I’d love for the people you talk with to like humans more afterward, sale or no sale.

For years I was grateful to have a full client roster with a waiting list. I’ve also helped hundreds of solopreneurs get more clients consistently.

Of the dozens of service providers I’ve hired, only 2 or 3 kept in touch regularly. Gentle follow-up is a big part of this course.

Is this for you?

A good fit if…

  • ✓You’re a coach, healer, teacher or other soulpreneur who works with clients 1:1 or in small groups
  • ✓Selling has felt pushy or uncomfortable, and you’d love a way of reaching out that feels like connecting
  • ✓You create content, and you’re ready to invite people more directly
  • ✓You’ve had seasons of feast and famine, and you’d like a steady rhythm of outreach
  • ✓You like learning at your own pace, and coming back to a module when you’re ready to try a new method

Probably not if…

  • ×You want a script to copy word for word. This course gives outlines and examples, and asks you to write in your own voice
  • ×You want personal coaching or feedback. This course is recorded, and you work through it at your own pace
  • ×You only sell self-paced courses. Much of this course, like the Circles of Enrollment, is for work with limited room, such as 1:1 clients or small groups

From a student of an earlier version of the course.

“This course was so much fun. I was totally captivated from start to finish and didn't want it to end.

So many interesting and easy ideas about how to get more ideal clients in ways that feel totally human and comfortable to implement.”

Questions

Before you enroll

“Do I need an email list or a big audience?”

No. You can begin with three people who already know you.

For your first invitations, personal messages and small BCC emails are enough.

“How much time does it take?”

The twenty main modules come to about ten and a half hours of short videos. A final module of extra lessons adds about 45 minutes, plus a few short extra clips.

The course suggests working on one method a month, so you can go at whatever pace fits your life.

“Can I try it before I buy?”

Yes. Module 1 is free to watch for 72 hours after you sign up with your email: start the free replay.

If you buy the course, Module 1 comes with it, along with all the others, and you keep them for life.

“Will I get scripts to copy?”

No, on purpose. Word-for-word templates often make outreach sound like someone else.

You get outlines and examples, then write in your own words (after sleeping on the examples, so their phrasing doesn’t creep into your message).

“Do I need a spreadsheet?”

No. The outreach template is a Google Doc with a simple list of names, and after you reach out to someone, you move their name to the bottom.

Your launch journal can be a blank document. The tracking spreadsheet is optional.

“What if no one replies?”

Silence after outreach is common, and the course has lessons on what to do next. You keep caring for the relationship without expecting a reply (I call this “bless and let go”), and notice which messages people respond to.

“I only have one offer. Can I still do this?”

Yes. Even with one offer, a regular gentle launch gives you a fresh way to talk about your offer each time.

“Can’t AI just write my outreach messages?”

It can draft a message in seconds. What it can’t do is write from your relationship with the one person you’re writing to.

In this course, every message starts by pausing on that person, and on how they’d love to support you.

“Is there personal feedback or coaching?”

The course is recorded, and it doesn’t include personal feedback.

Many lessons include past students’ questions with my answers, and you can bring your own questions to my free monthly Q&A call.

“Can I use it with my AI?”

Yes. Give a module’s lesson document to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and work through the course together.
