When an interview is done well
I’ve been interviewed on many podcasts, channels and summits, and I’ve also played the other role, as a host.
Rarely am I impressed with how my host did… or if I’m the host, how my guests did.
It often feels like an opportunity wasted for both sides...
Many guests answer questions too literally, and explain themselves too much. Hosts often ask what every guest has been asked before, and the audience tunes out.
When you interview someone for your video channel, social media page, or podcast – and you do a good job as a host – your guest is naturally excited to share the recording, introducing you to people interested in your topic.
Vice versa – when you’re being interviewed, and you do a great job as a guest, your host naturally is excited to share your interview even further!
This course teaches a way of interviewing that serves the audience first:
- ✓Start as a host. Guests say yes far more readily than busy hosts do.
- ✓As a guest, you speak to the audience, using the host’s questions as a bridge to what you came to share.
- ✓No need to define your ideal client first. You show up as yourself, and notice who resonates with you.
- ✓Practice first. A few Clarity Interviews with a friend or colleague help you find your message, so your first public interview isn’t your first try.
Unless you’re a celebrity to the audience, an interview isn’t a conversation between two people. It’s a presentation to the audience.
And you might even enjoy your “marketing” efforts, because you’re connecting from the heart with people whose message you’re genuinely curious about.
What you’ll be able to do, step by step
Each module has short videos and a lesson document you can read or hand to your AI. Most module documents also gather past students’ questions, with my answers.
- Module 1 · Begin with Clarity Interviews
Know what you want to say, and practice it out loud
Gather your Interview Message: what your ideal audience believes differently, what they need to understand, and the stories that show your experience. List five to ten questions you’d love a host to ask, and an offer you can describe in under two minutes.
Then practice in Clarity Interviews: an hour with a friend or colleague, taking turns as host and guest and sharing feedback at the end. I suggest at least three before your next public interview.
This module is free to watch for 72 hours: start the free Module 1 replay.
- Module 2 · First, interview others
Find guests who are likely to say yes, and invite them warmly
Learn why I suggest hosting before guesting, and how a guest who enjoyed your interview introduces you to their people by sharing the recording.
Find guests in your own circles, check their reach by the average likes on their recent posts (follower counts can mislead), and send a warm invitation. You’ll also set up simple tech, with the camera and light you probably already have.
- Module 3 · Being a great host
Host an interview your audience stays with, and your guest wants to share
Write questions with the Oprah principle in mind: what would your ideal client ask this guest, if they had only one meeting? And skip the questions that put audiences to sleep, starting with “Tell us about your journey” (the answer might begin, “Well, I started out as a fetus…”).
You’ll get my guest questionnaire as a Google Doc template to adapt, and the day-of habits I use, like a three-minute stopwatch for long-winded answers. One video shows me hosting a practice interview, and I explain where I look and when I switch views.
- Module 4 · Being a great guest
Get invited by hosts you’ve chosen with care
Find hosts by noticing where your friends and colleagues get interviewed, check each host’s audience, and reach out, ideally through a mutual contact. You’ll learn how to ask for that introduction without putting pressure on anyone.
When a host says yes, you’ll know how to reply, and what to expect from a single interview (so you keep going for the long run).
- Module 5 · More skills to practice as a guest
Bring your message to someone else’s audience
Prepare your message like a short talk, in segments of a few minutes, each with a phrase people will remember. Have one to five client stories ready, or your own story if you’re just starting out.
When a host’s question wanders, use it as a bridge back to what you came to share. At the end, speak your offer to the listener who connected with you most, and give them a search phrase instead of a web address they’ll forget.
- Module 6 · After the interview
Follow up warmly, and suggest what you might do together next
Send a specific thank-you right after the interview (so few people do this!), and suggest ways to keep collaborating, like a follow-up webinar for the host’s audience.
Then share the interview well. If you enjoy editing, there are optional ideas for short clips, YouTube chapters and a blog post.

What students loved most
When students write about this course, these are the moments they mention most:
- ✓Seeing, as a guest, that they’re speaking to the audience through the host.
- ✓Spotting the “tell us about your journey” trap, which one student had fallen into in nearly every interview.
- ✓Their first Clarity Interviews, which left them feeling uplifted, and clearer about which ideas to keep.
- ✓Permission to stop defining their ideal client on paper, which several found freeing.
- ✓Starting as a host, and hearing back from guests they invited.
These come from students of an earlier version of the course.
“Omigosh - I've always thought, I must be new and original so I don't bore people!! This makes so much more sense. Now to polish up my 'greatest hits!'”
“This is liberating, since I feel like a deer in headlights when people ask me "who is my ideal client."”

I’ve sat in both chairs
I’ve been interviewed on more than 100 creator channels, podcasts and summits. I’ve also interviewed more than 100 people myself, on webinars, videos and podcast episodes.
When a host asks how I got started, the literal answer is that I was bored in my third job. The more useful answer is that friends asked me how to market themselves without being salesy or boastful.
I’m definitely not a perfect interviewer, and I still improve a little each year.
A good fit if…
- ✓You’re a coach, healer, teacher or other soulpreneur, and you’d like interviews to help new people find your work
- ✓You’ve been a guest, and came away feeling you didn’t get to share what you came to say
- ✓You’d love to host conversations, even without a podcast or much of an audience yet
- ✓You’re new to interviews, or you don’t have many client stories yet
- ✓You’re willing to practice with a friend or colleague before you go public
Probably not if…
- ×You want personal coaching or feedback. This course is recorded, and you work through it at your own pace
- ×You’re hoping one big show will make your business. This course is about steady interviews over time
- ×You’d rather keep interviews a friendly chat. That’s fine, and this course is about preparing for the audience
By the end, you’ll…
- 1Have an Interview Message you’ve practiced out loud in Clarity Interviews.
- 2Know how to find, vet and invite guests, and host an interview they’ll be glad to share.
- 3Have a warm way to reach the hosts you’d love to be interviewed by, ideally through a mutual contact.
- 4Speak to the audience as a guest, using the host’s questions as a bridge to your message.
- 5Follow up after each interview in ways that can grow into friendships and collaborations.

Before you enroll
“Do I need a podcast or an audience?”
No. You don’t have to launch a podcast or keep a schedule, and an occasional series of interviews counts.
Whoever will watch, even a few friends, is your audience, and the course shows you how to prepare for them.
“How much time does it take?”
The videos add up to a little under six hours, in short lessons, most under ten minutes.
Each Clarity Interview takes about an hour on top of that, and you go at whatever pace fits your life.
“What if I don’t have client stories yet?”
One good story is enough to start, so you don’t need to wait until you have a portfolio.
If you don’t have one yet, the course offers fallbacks, like describing the kind of person your work helps most, or telling your own story.
“Can’t AI just write my interview questions?”
It can draft a list of questions in seconds. What it can’t do is practice with you, or show you which of your stories hold a listener’s attention.
Your Clarity Interviews do that, and the course shows you how to run them.
“Can I try it before I buy?”
Yes. Module 1 is free to watch for 72 hours after you sign up with your email: start the free replay.
If you buy the course, Module 1 comes with it, along with all the others, and you keep them for life.
“Will I get personal feedback?”
The course is recorded, and it doesn’t include personal feedback from me.
Feedback comes from your Clarity Interviews, where you and a friend or colleague take turns as host and guest. And you can bring questions to my free monthly Q&A call.
“Do I need special equipment?”
No. The camera in most recent computers is good enough, soft window light works well, and plain Zoom is fine.
For a mic, I use a pair of wired earbuds.
“Can I use it with my AI?”
Yes. Give a module’s lesson document to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and work through the course together.
“Is the course still current?”
The core ideas hold. A few details about software and platforms may have changed since I recorded the lessons, and the course’s Start Here page says so up front.
